| - Friedemann Kupsa (* 7. September 1943 in St. Pölten, Österreich) ist ein österreichischer Cellist. Friedemann Kupsa studierte an der Hochschule für Musik Wien und besuchte Meisterkurse bei Daniil Schafran, sowie Kammermusikkurse beim . Seit 1986 ist der Musiker Mitglied des Fanny Mendelssohn Quartetts. Mit diesem Ensemble bekam er internationale Anerkennung durch zahlreiche Kammermusik-Ersteinspielungen von Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, Ethel Smyth, Germaine Tailleferre und Grażyna Bacewicz. Der Cellist spielte die große Klavierkammermusik von Max Reger zusammen mit dem Pianisten Wolfram Lorenzen ein (Klavierquintett op. 64, Klaviertrio op. 102, Klavierquartette opp. 113 und 133) sowie die ersten 8 Streichquartette von Darius Milhaud und die zwei großen Streichquartette von Arthur Bliss. Zusammen mit der Pianistin Anna Silova spielte er die beiden Cellosonaten von Ethel Smyth als Weltersteinspielung ein. Auch mit der CD-Einspielung der Cellowerke von Nadia Boulanger konnte er sich profilieren. Außerdem veröffentlichte er zusammen mit der Pianistin Céline Dutilly die Einspielungen der beiden Werke für Cello und Klavier von Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, die „Sonata o Fantasia“ als Weltpremiere sowie das „Capriccio“. Sein Engagement für die Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts konnte Friedemann Kupsa mit den Weltersteinspielungen der Duo-Sonaten des griechischen Komponisten Nikos Skalkottas und des rumänischen Komponisten Anatol Vieru zeigen. Zusammen mit den Duo-Sonaten von Maurice Ravel, Zoltán Kodály, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud und den Variationen von Elizabeth Maconchy. spielte er die Weltpremiere der Duo-Komposition „Strassenmusik n°16“ op. 210 von ein, die den beiden Solisten Renate Eggebrecht, Violine und Friedemann Kupsa, Violoncello gewidmet ist. Der Musiker spielte mit seinem Ensemble in zahlreichen Konzerten wie u. a. beim Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Toblacher Gustav Mahler Festival, Frauen-Musikfestival Chard, Musikfest Lucca, Frauen-Musikfestival München und dem Moravia Festival begleitet von Rundfunkaufnahmen und Fernsehmitschnitten. 1991 gründete er zusammen mit seiner Frau Renate Eggebrecht das CD-Label Troubadisc, das Klassische Musik jenseits des gängigen Repertoires veröffentlicht. He has been a member of the Fanny Mendelssohn Quartet since 1986, receiving international acclaim for numerous first recordings on CD of music by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, Ethel Smyth, Germaine Tailleferre and Grażyna Bacewicz. With the pianist Wolfram Lorenzen he recorded the great chamber works of Max Reger, and his commitment to 20th-century chamber music is further shown by his recording of the first eight string quartets by Darius Milhaud and the two great quartets by Arthur Bliss. He made the first-ever recording of Ethel Smyth's two cello sonatas and has also attracted attention by recording cello works by Nadia Boulanger. In addition, together with the pianist Céline Dutilly, he issued a recording of the two works for cello and piano by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel: the Sonata o Fantasia, as a world premiere, and the Capriccio. Friedemann Kupsa has displayed his commitment to the music of the twentieth century with the world premiere recording of the Duo Sonatas by the Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas and the Romanian composer Anatol Vieru.
