La prima risale al 1910, quando venne prodotto dalla compagnia di Thomas Edison il film muto omonimo diretto da J. Searle Dawley. A questi ne seguirono altri due muti ma il successo arrivò nel 1931, con la prima trasposizione sonora diretta da James Whale, nella quale l'interpretazione della creatura divenne iconica restando nell'immaginario collettivo come quella definitiva grazie all'interpretazione di Boris Karloff e alla sua caratterizzazione, ideata da Whale stesso insieme al truccatore Jack Pierce che creeranno la maschera più famosa e imitata nel cinema horror.
