Stephan Hermlin (German: [ˈʃtɛ.fan ˈhɛʁm.liːn]; 13 April 1915 – 6 April 1997), real name Rudolf Leder, was a German author. He wrote, among other things, stories, essays, translations, and lyric poetry and was one of the more well-known authors of former East Germany.

Di fede marxista, combatté nella guerra civile spagnola e nel 1947 si stabilì nella Germania orientale. L'affidabilitá di tale autobiografia è seriamente ridimensionata da E. Hobsbawm, (Interesting times. A twentieth-century life, New York 2002, pp. 62-65) che smentisce, fra l'altro, la sua partecipazione alla Guerra civile spagnola. Hermlin föddes i en judisk familj och anslöt sig till Tysklands kommunistiska ungdomsförbund (KJVD) 1931. 1936–45 levde han i exil i Brittiska Palestinamandatet, Frankrike och Schweiz, vartefter han återvände till Tyskland och arbetade som radioman i Frankfurt am Main. I sin första diktsamling Zwölf Balladen von den grossen Städten ('Tolv ballader från de stora städerna', 1945) skildrar Hermlin sina livserfarenheter med en berättarstil hämtad från den klassiska tyska litterära traditionen.
