Der Lincoln Continental wurde über die Jahre zu einem Inbegriff des amerikanischen Straßenkreuzers. Besonders bekannt sind die Continentals der 1960er-Jahre mit ihren Selbstmördertüren. In einem offenen Sonderfahrzeug dieser Generation wurde John F. Kennedy erschossen. Im Laufe der Jahre änderte sich die Position des Continental. Bis 1981 war Continental die Bezeichnung für die größten Lincoln-Modelle. Danach erhielten diese Fahrzeuge die Bezeichnung Town Car, während der Name Continental ab 1982 auf kleinere, aber teurere Limousinen übertragen wurde, die mit dem Cadillac Seville konkurrieren sollten. The model line was introduced following the construction of a personal vehicle for Edsel Ford, who commissioned a coachbuilt 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr convertible, developed as a vacation vehicle to attract potential Lincoln buyers.
