King was a career officer in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1992, retiring with the rank of colonel. She taught physical education and coached diving at the United States Air Force Academy, becoming the first woman to serve on the faculty of a U.S military academy and the first woman to coach a male athlete to an NCAA championship. She was named NCAA Division II Coach of the Year three times. From 1992 to 2006, King was assistant athletic director at the University of Kentucky. She was also the president of US Diving from 1990 to 1994.
