- Fred « Steamer » Maxwell (né le 19 mai 1890 à Winnipeg, dans la province du Manitoba, au Canada - mort le 11 septembre 1975 à Winnipeg, dans la province du Manitoba, au Canada) est un joueur canadien de hockey sur glace qui évoluait en Amérique du Nord au début du XXe siècle. Jouant à la position de rover à une époque où le hockey se joue avec des équipes de sept joueurs, il passe six saisons avec les Monarchs de Winnipeg de la Manitoba Hockey League entre 1909 et 1915, avec lesquels il remporte deux titres de champion du Manitoba ainsi que la Coupe Allan de champion amateur du Canada en 1915. Considéré comme l'un des meilleurs joueurs de son ère, il refuse durant sa carrière plusieurs offres pour devenir professionnel. Il arrête de jouer lorsqu'il apprend que certains de ses coéquipiers amateurs reçoivent des salaires. Il entame alors une carrière d'entraîneur. Il conduit les Falcons de Winnipeg à la Coupe Allan en 1920. Grâce à cette victoire, son équipe joue en tant qu'équipe du Canada lors des premiers Jeux olympiques de 1920 et remporte la médaille d'or. Il continue d'entraîner jusque dans les années 1930, menant plusieurs équipes à des titres de champions sénior et junior. En 1962, il est intronisé au Temple de la renommée du hockey. - Frederick George "Steamer" Maxwell (May 19, 1890 – September 11, 1975) was a Canadian amateur ice hockey player. He played rover in the days of seven-man hockey at the turn of the 20th century, spending six seasons with the Winnipeg Monarchs of the Manitoba Hockey League (MHL) between 1909 and 1915. Considered one of the top players of his era, he won two Manitoba provincial championships with the Monarchs and was a member of the team that won the 1915 Allan Cup as Canadian senior amateur champions. Maxwell spurned multiple offers to turn professional and ultimately quit playing hockey when he learned some of his peers at the senior amateur level were getting paid. A long-time coach at the senior level, Maxwell led the Winnipeg Falcons to an Allan Cup championship in 1920; the team went on to win an Olympic Gold medal as Canada's representative in the 1920 Olympic ice hockey tournament. He coached into the 1930s, leading several teams to senior and junior championships. Maxwell is an honoured member of the Manitoba Sports and Hockey Halls of Fame and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1962. (en)
