- Donald Lee Haskins (March 14, 1930 – September 7, 2008), nicknamed "The Bear", was an American basketball player and coach. He played college basketball for three years under coach Henry Iba at Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University). He was the head coach at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1961 to 1999 (the school was known as Texas Western College until 1967). In 1966 his team won the NCAA tournament over the Wildcats of the University of Kentucky, coached by Adolph Rupp. The watershed game initiated the end of racial segregation in college basketball. In his time at Texas Western/UTEP, he compiled a 719–353 record, suffering only five losing seasons. His Miners won 14 Western Athletic Conference championships and four WAC tournament titles, had fourteen NCAA tournament berths and made seven trips to the NIT. Haskins led UTEP to 17 20-plus-win seasons and served as an assistant Olympic team coach in 1972. He was admitted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997 as a basketball coach. His 1966 team was inducted in its entirety by the same Hall of Fame on September 7, 2007. (en)

Durante su etapa universitaria jugó en la universidad de Oklahoma A&M (Agricultural & Mechanical College, la actual Oklahoma State) bajo las órdenes del entrenador miembro del Hall of Fame Henry Iba. Don Haskins fue introducido como miembro del Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame en 1997 y del College Basketball Hall of Fame en 2006 por los méritos conseguidos durante su carrera como entrenador, en la que dirigió a los Miners de Texas Western University, posteriormente llamada UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso). Durante los 38 años que fue el entrenador jefe de los Miners (1961-1999) ganó 4 Torneos WAC (Western Athletic Conference), 7 Campeonatos de la WAC y consiguió el histórico triunfo en la Final de la NCAA de 1966 contra los Kentucky Wildcats de Adolph Rupp, también miembro del Basketbal Hall of Fame Basketball y del College Basketball Hall of Fame. Terminó su trayectoria como entrenador con los Miners con un balance de 716 victorias y 353 derrotas, consiguiendo así terminar 33 temporadas con balance positivo de las 38 que ejerció en la UTEP y 14 apariciones en los torneos de la NCAA, además de ser invitado 7 veces al NIT (National Invitation Tournament). Haskins murió en su casa el 7 de septiembre de 2008.
