- Danny Thomas Roundfield (May 26, 1953 – August 6, 2012) was an American professional basketball player. The 6'8" forward/center graduated from Detroit's Chadsey Senior High School in 1971. On the collegiate scene, Roundfield was twice selected to the All-Mid-American Conference Team for Central Michigan University; he was also the 1975 MAC Player of the Year. Roundfield spent 12 seasons in the American Basketball Association and National Basketball Association, playing for the Indiana Pacers (1975–1978), Atlanta Hawks (1978–1984), Detroit Pistons (1984–1985), and Washington Bullets (1985–1987). Then he moved to Turin, Italy, and played a season for Auxilium Torino. Roundfield earned a reputation as a strong rebounder and tenacious defender, and during his career he was named to five NBA All-Defensive teams and three All-Star teams. His nickname was Dr. Rounds. On November 21, 1978, Roundfield scored a career best 38 points, along with grabbing 10 rebounds, in a 113-107 win over the San Diego Clippers. In the 1979 NBA Playoffs, Roundfield led the Hawks to a first round win over the Rockets while averaging 18 points, 15 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks a game. However, in the following round, the hawks would be eliminated by the defending champion Washington Bullets in a tough seven game series. Roundfield was selected to the NBA Eastern Conference All-Star team in three consecutive seasons from 1980 to 1982. He made the most of his 1980 All-Star appearance debut, scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in 27 minutes coming off the bench. He came close to winning the game's MVP award for his performance, but was overshadowed by fellow Detroit product George Gervin's 34-point output. In the 1982 NBA Playoffs, Roundfield scored a career playoff high 29 points, in a deciding Game 2 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers in a best of three first round series. He was unable to play in the 1982-83 season, though, due to an injury. (en)

Roundfield a acquis une réputation de fort rebondeur et de défenseur tenace, et est nommé à cinq reprises dans les premiers cinq défensifs, NBA All-Defensive teams, premier cinq lors des saisons 1979-1980, 1981-1982, 1982-1983 et deuxième cinq lors des saisons 1980-1981 et 1983-1984 . Il ne joue pas en 1982 à cause d'une blessure et est alors remplacé par Buc Williams des Nets du New Jersey. Roundfield réalise sa meilleure performance au All-Star Game 1980, où il inscrit 18 points et capte 13 rebonds en seulement 27 minutes de jeu. Le trophée de MVP de la rencontre est remporté par George Gervin qui inscrit 34 points. C'est cette performance qui permit à Roundfield de se faire connaître des fans NBA hors de ceux d'Atlanta. Roundfield vit ensuite à Atlanta, Géorgie, où il travaille pour Earth Tech, une division de Tyco International. Surpris au large d'Aruba par de violents courants marins alors qu'il nageait avec sa femme, il meurt noyé, après avoir permis à son épouse de rejoindre la plage de Beach Baby. (fr)

Po ukończeniu Chadsey Senior High School Roundfield kontynuował naukę oraz grę na was Central Michigan University. W tym czasie był wybierany dwukrotnie do składu All-Mid-American Conference Team, a w 1975 roku otrzymał nagrodę dla najlepszego gracza konferencji - M.A.C. Player of the Year. Pomimo wyboru w drafcie do NBA, w 1975 roku przez Cleveland Cavaliers, swoją zawodową karierę rozpoczął w konkurencyjnej lidze ABA w zespole Indiana Pacers. W kolejnym sezonie, po rozwiązaniu ligi ABA, Pacers przyłączyli się do NBA. 9 czerwca 1978 roku podpisał, jako wolny agent, umowę z klubem Hawks, w którym spędził kolejne 6 lat. W tym czasie był trzykrotnie powoływany do udziału w meczu gwiazd NBA, niestety z powodu kontuzji nie mógł wystąpić w edycji 1982. Podczas swojego debiutu w spotkaniu gwiazd, w 1980 roku, zanotował 18 punktów oraz 13 zbiórek w 27 minut. Jednak George Gervin uzyskał aż 34 punkty i to jemu przypadła w udziale nagroda MVP. W trakcie występów w Atlancie Roundfield był też aż pięciokrotnie wybierany do składów najlepszych obrońców ligi, trzykrotnie do pierwszego i dwukrotnie do drugiego. Nominowano go także do drugiego składu najlepszych zawodników ligi w 1980 roku. 18 czerwca 1984 roku został wytransferowany do Detroit Pistons w zamian za Antoine Carra, Cliffa Levingstona oraz wybór drugiej rundy draftu 1986 roku. Po nieco słabszym sezonie został wysłany do Waszyngtonu. Pistons otrzymali natomiast oraz Ricka Mahorna. Ostatnie dwa lata jego kariery nie należały do udanych o pogłębiające się kontuzje spowodowały, iż w 1987 roku rozstał się z NBA. Próbował jeszcze swoich sił w Europie, w barwach włoskiego Auxilium Torino, jednak również ze zmiennym szczęściem. Po tym epizodzie zdecydował się na definitywne zakończenie kariery sportowej. Zmarł tragicznie 6 sierpnia 2012 na Arubie, podczas próby ratowania swojej topiącej się żony, utonął. (pl)
