The 1961 season was the Minnesota Vikings' first in the National Football League (NFL) after being created as an expansion franchise to become the league's fourteenth team. Their inaugural regular season game was a 37–13 victory at home to the Chicago Bears; rookie quarterback Fran Tarkenton came off the bench to toss four touchdown passes and run for another. However, under head coach Norm Van Brocklin, the Vikings won just two of their remaining 13 games, including a seven-game losing streak, and finished the season with a 3–11 record.

Destinati ad entrare nella storia della franchigia anche il kicker Mike Mercer, che con un field goal dalle 12 yards mise a segno i primi punti della franchigia, e Bob Schnelker, che mise a segno il primo touchdown della franchigia su passaggio di 14 yards di Tarkenton. Tuttavia, nel prosieguo della stagione, i Vikings non riuscirono a ripetersi e chiusero l'annata con un record negativo di 3 vittorie e 11 sconfitte, riuscendo a cogliere solo altre due vittorie, una contro i Baltimore Colts e l'altra contro i Los Angeles Rams (entrambe al ), che valse loro il settimo ed ultimo posto nella e la conseguente esclusione dai playoff.
