The Treaty of Bassein (or Treaty of Vasai) was a pact signed on 31 December 1802 between the British East India Company and Baji Rao II, the Maratha Peshwa of Poona in India after the Battle of Poona. The treaty was a decisive step in the dissolution of the Maratha Empire, which led to the East India Company's annexation of the empire's territories in western India in 1818.

  • El tractat de Bassein de 1802 fou un acord entre el peshwa maratha de Poona i la Companyia Britànica de les Índies Orientals, signat a Bassein (Vasai) el 31 de desembre de 1802. Aquest tractat va seguir a la batalla de Poona i el 13 de maig de 1803 va permetre la restauració al tron de Poona del peshwa (Poona havia estat ocupada per Holkar) sota protectorat britànic. El rebuig a aquest tractat va causar la segona guerra maratha del 1803. Segons el tractat els britànics podrien estacionar sis mil homes en territori del peshwa; les taxes de diversos districtes (en total 28 lakhs de rúpies) foren cedides a la companyia; el peshwa no podria signar tractats amb altres estats ni declarar la guerra sense autorització i els estrangers no britànics al seu servei serien expulsats; la companyia seria àrbitre en qualsevol litigi territorial del peshwa. On 13 May 1803, Baji Rao II was restored as Peshwa under the protection of the East India Company and the leading Maratha state had thus become a client of the British. The treaty led to expansion of the Company rule over the Indian subcontinent. However, the treaty was not acceptable to all Marathas chieftains, and resulted in the Second Anglo-Maratha War. (en)
