Ačkoliv se na tomto území nacházel les už v Době ledové, k dnešním dnům byla plocha Sherwoodského lesa omezena na 423 hektarů, které se rozkládají v okolí vesnice Edwinstowe, kde se nachází Thoresby Hall. - Sherwood Forest ist ein Landschaftspark, der das Dorf Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire (England) umgibt. Der heutige Park ist nur ein Rest des weit größeren Waldes, der mit der Sagengestalt Robin Hood in Verbindung gebracht wird. Im Wald wächst eine große Anzahl sehr alter und mächtiger Eichen, deren bedeutendste und größte Majors-Eiche (englisch Major Oak) genannt wird und in lokalen Chroniken als Robin Hoods Hauptquartier angesehen wird.

- La forêt de Sherwood est une forêt célèbre entourant le village d'Edwinstowe dans le Nottinghamshire, en Angleterre, historiquement associée à la légende de Robin des Bois, mais aussi à l'épopée des Luddites à l'ère industrielle. Les 423 ha de la forêt actuelle sont les vestiges du vaste domaine de chasse royal qui s'étendait à l'intérieur des comtés voisins. Un parc ouvert au public a été ouvert en 1969 par le conseil du comté de Nottinghamshire, qui administre la forêt.
