| - 円唇母音（えんしんぼいん、まるくちぼいん）とは、唇の丸みを伴った母音のことをいう。母音を調音する際の唇の形にはさまざまなものがあるが調音音声学では丸みを帯びるか帯びないかで二分割し、丸みを帯びないものは非円唇母音という。 国際音声字母 (IPA) ではこの円唇か非円唇かとともに、舌の最頂部の前後・高低の位置で基本母音の字母が定められている。なお円唇母音といっても言語によってはより丸みの強い形で実現されるものや、逆に丸みが少なく現れるものがある。そこで IPA では丸みの強いものに[ ̹ ] の記号、丸みの弱いものには [ ̜ ] の記号を付けて表記できる。 例えば日本語の場合、共通語を含む東日本方言のウは円唇母音の [u] よりは丸みが少なく、非円唇母音の [ɯ] ほど平らではないので[u̜] と表記される一方で、西日本方言のウは円唇母音で発音されるので [u]と表記される。唇音の前後や長音の「う」。また、西日本方言でなくとも、唇音の前後や長音の「う」は[u̜]というよりも[u]に近い音で発音される。 (ja)

In most languages, front vowels tend to be unrounded, and back vowels tend to be rounded.
