Norman Edward Shumway (February 9, 1923 – February 10, 2006) was a pioneer of heart surgery at Stanford University. He was the 67th president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the first to perform an adult human to human heart transplantation in the United States.

D.) machte. Danach erhielt er seine fachärztliche Ausbildung als Chirurg (Residency) an der University of Minnesota, wo er 1956 in Chirurgie promoviert wurde. Ab 1958 lehrte er Chirurgie am Stanford Hospital der Stanford University in San Francisco und (nach dem Umzug der Klinik) Palo Alto. 1965 wurde er Leiter der Abteilung für Kardio- und Thoraxchirurgie der Stanford University (de) Norman E. Shumway (ur. 9 lutego 1923 w Kalamazoo, Michigan, zm. 10 lutego 2006 w San Francisco), kardiochirurg amerykański, pionier transplantacji. Związany ze Stanford University, sławę zyskał dzięki przeprowadzeniu pierwszej w USA otwartej transplantacji serca w 1968, rok po operacji dokonanej w RPA przez Christiaana Barnarda. Barnard zastosował technikę przeszczepu serca, którą poznał podczas krótkiego pobytu w klinice Shumwaya w Stanford, nad którą Shumway pracował i doskonalił od 1956 roku podczas eksperymentów na psach. W latach 70. przyczynił się do rozwoju operacji przeszczepów, wprowadzając cyklosporynę, zmniejszającą ryzyko odrzucenia organu przez organizm. (pl)
