Mingus Dynasty was an American jazz ensemble formed in 1979, just after the death of Charles Mingus, which featured many musicians Mingus recorded or played with. The group was named after the 1959 album Mingus Dynasty. In 1988, the group expanded to a big band format, and the Mingus Big Band has held weekly residency in New York City since 1991. Currently there are three Mingus repertory groups, Mingus Dynasty, Mingus Big Band and the Mingus Orchestra. They all tour extensively worldwide and rotate Monday nights at the Jazz Standard in New York.

Drei Jahre nach dem Tod von Charles Mingus erschien unter diesem Namen ein weiteres Album von ehemaligen Mingus-Mitspielern, wie Richard Williams, Jimmy Knepper, Sir Roland Hanna, Ricky Ford und jüngeren Mingus-Bewunderern wie Reggie Johnson (Reincarnation, 1982). Der Kreis erweiterte sich um die langjährigen Mingus-Pianisten Jaki Byard, Horace Parlan und um die Trompeter Randy Brecker und Jack Walrath, die Saxophonisten Craig Handy, Clifford Jordan und David Murray, und den Flötisten James Newton: Die Musiker gingen regelmäßig auf Tournee und spielten ausschließlich Kompositionen von Mingus. Von der Mingus Dynasty sind auch einige Kompositionen von Charles Mingus wie Chair In The Sky, das durch Joni Mitchell auf 1979 bekannt wurde, oder Harlene (1991) uraufgeführt worden. 1993 wurde die Dynasty zunächst zugunsten der Mingus Big Band nicht weiter verfolgt. Seit mehreren Jahren ist aber nun die Mingus Dynasty im Septett-Format neu belebt worden; musikalischer Leiter ist der Bassist Boris Kozlov.
