This listing of infantry battalions of the Army National Guard from 1959 is organized by regiment. The Pentomic reorganization of the United States Army in 1957 eliminated the infantry regiment as a combat unit, and was extended to units of the Army National Guard in 1959. To perpetuate unit heritage, infantry battle groups were assigned to a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System. Such parent regiments provided a basis for continuing military traditions despite frequent reorganizations. Unlike those of the Regular Army, the parent regiments of the Army National Guard perpetuate the military heritage associated with a specific geographical area in line with the roots of the National Guard in state militia forces.
