The Republic of Kazakhstan, once part as a republic of the Soviet Union, was a primary venue for the Soviet nuclear weapon testing from 1949 until 1989. Following the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1991, Kazakhstan became the fourth-largest nuclear power (following Ukraine) in the world and hosted a considerably large weapon support infrastructure due to its reliance on Soviet nuclear program as a means to develop its own local economy.

La seule centrale nucléaire du pays, le réacteur à neutrons rapides refroidi au sodium BN-350 situé près d' Aktau dans la région de Mangystau, a été arrêté en juin 1999 après 26 ans de fonctionnement, et a été mis hors service définitivement en 2001. Cependant, la centrale était principalement utilisée à des fins de dessalement, et non pour produire de l'électricité. Sa puissance était donc limitée.
