Il se distingue d'abord comme géologue puis comme philosophe en donnant une nouvelle impulsion à l'idéalisme philosophique par la généralisation qu'il fait de la théorie de l'évolution. Successivamente frequentò anche l'Università Harvard per studiare scienze naturali con il professor Louis Agassiz. Il 14 gennaio 1846 sposò Caroline Nisbet da cui ebbe quattro figli. È sepolto presso il Mountain View Cemetery di Oakland. (it) Joseph LeConte, född den 26 februari 1823 i Liberty County i Georgia, död den 6 juli 1901, var en amerikansk geolog och naturvetare. LeConte, som lärjunge vid Harvarduniversitetet av Louis Agassiz, blev 1851 professor först vid Georgias universitet, 1852 vid , 1857 vid och 1869 vid Kaliforniens universitet i Berkeley. Han var preses för 1896.
