Il entame sa carrière d'abord en rugby à XIII sous le maillot des Warrington Wolves puis des Leeds Rhinos en Super League. Élu meilleur joueur de la Super League en 1998, il est appelé en équipe du pays de Galles et de Grande-Bretagne.
