Horace Fletcher (August 10, 1849 – January 13, 1919) was an American food faddist who earned the nickname "The Great Masticator" for his argument that food should be chewed thoroughly until liquefied before swallowing: "Nature will castigate those who don't masticate." Von ihm stammt der Ausspruch: „Nature will castigate those who don't masticate“ („Die Natur wird diejenigen bestrafen, die nicht gründlich kauen“). Fletcher erhielt auf Grund seines nachdrücklichen Einsatzes für die Vorverdauung durch Kauen den Beinamen „The Great Masticator“ („Das große Mahlwerk“). Selbst Flüssigkeiten sollten „gekaut“ und eingespeichelt werden. (de)
