Geir Lundestad (born January 17, 1945) is a Norwegian historian, who until 2014 served as the director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute when Olav Njølstad took over. In this capacity, he also served as the secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. However, he is not a member of the committee itself. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

Lundestad werd geboren in de mijnbouwgemeenschap Sulitjelma, in het verre noorden van Noorwegen. Tijdens zijn middelbareschoolperiode ging hij in 1962/1963 op uitwisseling in de omgeving van Minneapolis, ten tijde van de Cubacrisis (oktober 1962). In deze periode raakte hij ook geïnteresseerd in de Amerikaanse politiek en geschiedenis.
