A coal trimmer or trimmer is a position within the engineering department of a coal-fired ship which involves all coal handling duties. Their main task is to ensure that coal is evenly distributed within a vessel to ensure it remains trim in the water. Their efforts to control the fore-and-aft angle at which a ship floats is the reason they’re called “trimmers”. Without proper management of the coal bunkers, ships could easily list due to uneven distribution of the coal.

Der Kohlentrimmer hatte die Aufgabe, auf mit Kohle befeuerten Dampfschiffen die Kohle aus den zum Teil weit vom Kesselraum entfernten Kohlebunkern heranzuschaffen. Die eigentliche Feuerung der Kessel zur Dampferzeugung übernahmen die Schiffsheizer. Mit der Verbreitung der Ölfeuerung und der Einführung von dieselgetriebenen Schiffen verlor der Beruf an Bedeutung und besteht heute nicht mehr. Die Arbeit wurde in der Regel im Dreiwachen-Törn gefahren. Das bedeutete, dass ein Trimmer vier Stunden arbeitete, acht Stunden Ruhezeit hatte und dann nochmals einen Törn von vier Stunden Arbeit plus acht Stunden Ruhezeit abhielt. Vierundzwanzig Stunden bestanden folglich aus acht Stunden Arbeit und sechzehn Stunden Freiwache. Die Arbeitsbedingungen der Trimmer waren nach heutigen Maßstäben oftmals nahezu unzumutbar. Die Kohlebunker waren lichtlose, verwinkelte und mit Spanten, Stützen und Stringern durchzogene Schiffsräume, die zum Teil in gleicher Höhe, zum Teil höher als die Kesselräume lagen. Die Kohle wurde, sofern sie nicht selbständig aus den Bunkerlöchern rieselte, mit Hilfe von Trimmerschaufeln in Schubkarren geschaufelt. Die Schubkarren wurden dann über Holzbohlen, die auf der Kohle lagen, zum Kesselraum gebracht und dort vor den Kesseln ausgeladen. In den Bunkern, die oft mit stickiger Luft und Kohlenstaub gefüllt waren, diente eine einfache Kabellampe als notdürftige Beleuchtung. In hohen Bunkern, die über mehrere Decks reichten, war die Arbeit oft gefährlich, wenn sich die Kohlen lawinenartig lösten und, durch Trichterbildung während des Abschaufelns oder durch Seegang hervorgerufen, nach unten rutschten. Die Kohlentrimmer standen auf der untersten Stufe der Bordhierarchien. Schiffsheizer begannen meist als Kohlentrimmer und konnten nach zwei Jahren in den Kesselraum wechseln. (de)

The role of trimmers starts with the bunkering of coal, distributing it evenly within the bunkers, and then providing a consistent delivery of coal to the stoker or fireman working the vessel’s boilers. Coal Trimming was also a role based at the docks and would involve levelling out the coal in a ships hold to ensure that the ship was safe to travel. Coal was transported to the docks via train wagons and the coal was tipped into the ship. During the process of the coal being delivered into the hold of the ship it would form a conical pile. This would be unsafe for the ship to sail in case the coal moved to one side causing the ship to list and roll over. Trimmers would shovel the coal out so that it was level and the ship was safe. It was a tough difficult job in dark and dangerous conditions. (en)
