C. J. Chenier (born Clayton Joseph Thompson, September 28, 1957 in Port Arthur, Texas) is the Creole son of the Grammy Award-winning "King of Zydeco", Louisiana musician, Clifton Chenier. In 1987, Chenier followed in his father's footsteps and led his father's band as an accordion performer and singer of zydeco, a blend of cajun and creole music. With five previous albums to his credit, by 1994, Chenier began to record for Chicago-based Alligator Records.

Il apprend le clavier et surtout le saxophone et joue dans diverses formations, jusqu'à ce que son père l'appelle à se joindre à lui en 1978. Il devient le saxophoniste du groupe, puis la santé de Clifton Chenier se faisant de plus en plus déclinante, il passe à l'accordéon et remplace son père au cours des bals. Es hijo del gran acordeonista Clifton Chenier, y uno de los más conocidos músicos cajún actuales.Actúa al frente de la banda histórica de su padre, la , y ha editado en el sello especializado en blues Alligator Records. Inicialmente comenzó tocando el saxo, instrumento con el que se incorporó a la banda de su padre en 1978, con sólo 21 años. A mediados de los años 1980, cuando aquel enfermó, C.
