Va néixer a Fliünt, una antiga ciutat al Peloponès que estava sota el govern d'Esparta, quan Plató va fundar la seva Acadèmia. Temisti diu que Axiòtea havia llegit La República de Plató i que després va viatjar a Atenes per ser la seva alumna. - Axiothea of Phlius (Greek: Ἀξιοθέα Φλειασία fl. c. 350 BCE) was a female student of Plato and Speusippus. She was born in Phlius, an ancient city in the Peloponnese which was under Spartan rule when Plato founded his Academy. Axiothea is said by Themistius to have read Plato's Republic and then travelled to Athens to be his student. In order to avoid becoming a hetaera, Axiothea dressed as a man during her time at Plato's Academy. After the death of Plato she continued her studies with Speusippus, Plato's nephew. (en)

Lá, as mulheres recebiam a mesma educação que a dos homens e em grande parte possuíam direitos iguais. Segundo Temístio, Asioteia leu A República e então viajou para Atenas para se tornar estudante do filósofo; estudou na Academia disfarçada, vestida como um homem, devido ao olhar da sociedade ateniense quanto às mulheres (a exemplo, as hetairas).
